Firewood

main1

The stock for our firewood production is generally sourced from local coppice woodlands that have fallen out of management. This means that the employment benefits, environmental benefits and benefit of our service to customers are therefore all kept local. The firewood we supply is all air-dried in a purpose built drying facility. This helps us to dry the cut, split logs to a good standard, over the summer months.

If we are not happy with the dryness of the logs, then we do not sell them. As we aim to use everything cut in the restoration of a coppice woodland, there is a wide variety of species to be found in our firewood deliveries.

Species include:

  • Cherry
  • Alder
  • Oak
  • Lime
  • Sycamore
  • Blackthorn
  • Birch
  • Sweet chestnut
  • Beech
  • Hazel Hawthorn
  • Yew (very occasional)
  • Holly Ash

The rationale behind the way we supply our customers is not a “first come, first served basis”. As more people use firewood to heat their homes, for either economic, environmental or aesthetic reasons, we believe that continuity of supply is increasingly important. To this end we aim to supply our existing customers before taking on new customers. To help us manage the peak demand through the colder months, we encourage our existing customers, to stock up early in the summer. This enables us to maximise our dry stock and ensure they have a guaranteed quantity of good dry logs. This also helps us to meet the higher demand experienced in colder, longer winters.

The logs are cut to 8-10” long and up to 5” across as a standard. Should you require larger logs please get in touch. We can cut logs up to 20” which can be delivered green for you to dry over the summer or we can dry them for you for a later delivery.

We deal in logs by the cubic metre bag. If you buy logs by weight, you may be buying water, as wetter (or green) logs are heavier. The volume of logs changes very little, green or seasoned. We have found that once our customers have worked out their requirements in cubic metres they don’t go back to the vagaries of buying a “load of logs” or a “ton of logs”.

The vast majority of our log sales are the popular hardwood logs. We heat our family home using properly dried softwood logs (usually Larch). We have found them cleaner burning, easier to handle and light. The only downside we have found is that they require a properly maintained stove (good air flow control is required to prevent overly rapid burning) however, this is more than compensated for by the reduced cost and greater availability of the raw material.

To keep our prices competitive we deliver to a limited area in the Furness and South Lakes area. The exact area for delivery varies depending on the amount in a single delivery, or whether it can be combined with another delivery in the same area. We aim to get the firewood to as close to where you need it as is possible by vehicle. Delivery can be by trailer mounted crane behind a 4x4, which gives us the ability to place bags over garden walls etc, or by means of a pick up and trailer.

We can also supply bagged kindling sticks. These are made from off cuts of kiln dried softwood which make them extremely easy to light and ensures that they give off a large amount of heat.
